Instant Pot Ham Baked with Honey

October 20, 2018

I had the idea to get a ham so I’d have a ham bone to make some multi-bean soup, but wowzer, Honeybaked Hams are like $75+!! I searched Kroger without finding the hams, then went to Sprouts where all I found was in the deli section for $11+/lb. I later went back to Kroger where I finally found an affordable, spiral cut ham for $2.69/lb, untagged/priced, so no weight, but the cashier said it was 10 lbs. I could have weighed at home but didn’t. It was too big to fit in the Instant Pot – I cut some off one side, and a few slices from the bottom and put them in the freezer.

I followed this recipe from My Heart Beets but used 15 minutes instead of 10 since I think it was still more than 6.5 lbs.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 c water
  • spiral cut ham - maybe 9 lbs?
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 2 t dijon mustard
  • 2 t worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 t ginger
  • 1/4 t ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 t ground cloves
  • 1/2 t cinnamon (I didn't use cinnamon)

Instructions

1

Put the water and ham in the Instant Pot

2

Mix the sugar and honey plus seasonings, all optional per the OP, in a bowl

3

Pour the honey mix over the ham

4

Before starting: Put the ring in the IP lid; secure the lid; close the pressure valve

5

Manual button - the OP suggested 10 minutes; I did 15 but it could have been less

6

Natural release for 10 minutes, then quick release if needed (not needed for me)

7

Drain the liquid so it's easier to remove the ham

8

Rest the ham in the pot for 10 minutes

9

Remove the ham

10

Put the liquid back and use Saute button to reduce to sauce for use on leftovers or whatever

15 minutes was too long, and all those spices, especially the cloves, even at 1/4 teaspoon, were too strong. At the end, I reduced the liquid from about 3 cups to maybe 2, but that intensified the spices, so I did not use it. The OP liked the burnt slice on the bottom, but I found it a little too clove-heavy, plus the bottom slices were a little – dry, actually, despite sitting in the liquid. Hmmm. Next time, no spice, less time, and maybe not spiral cut?
